Illustrating Ideas

Just experimenting really. Trying to develop a final design which will be repeated throughout each sin, as my final piece.

Envy

Continueing with the idea with all of the 7 deadly sins.

Processing my ideas

My initial Ideas
I began processing ideas digitally as digitally I have complete control over each design. Digital allows me to create ideas, designs and layouts quickly and effectivly. When settled with some final designs I will begin processing them using both digital and print as the mediums.

I'm thinking using one tone of colour on each design. I will select the colour using each sin as the guide, allowing even the colour alone to reperesent each sin.

Clouds and Myths
Monotypes by Lino Mannocci

My tutor sugested an interesting book to me which gave me a great idea to combine print with degital. I enjoy working in both mediums and hopefully combining the two will create an interesting, yet unique take on both medias.

Going to begin firstly working in digital and hopefully see where I go from there.

Been struggling with ideas for final pieces and final exhibition. My project so far just seems to say nothing about the 7 deadly sins. My ideas are works in progress. I still intend to continue with Printmaking though and hopefully my project will begin to come together when I have more of an idea of what exactly I want to do. I have been preoccupied with universities and choices and so on i've lost track really, took my eye off the ball. But its not all over, theres time to pull somehting out of the bag.

A1 Collage
Collage is quite often an interesting medium to use. I mean to draw with paper is interesting in itself. With collage anything goes, it enables you to combine all mediums into one outcome. For instance this collage consists of direct print, printed text, cut outs, papers and foil and yet it works. All very different materials combined together to create one unique outcome.
There is many imperfections but also many possibbilities.
4 Day Print run in total, exiting though. My first ever Propper Print run. I am a lot more confident with Silkscreen now, this print run has allowed me to bond with the media and also to find something I enjoy.
Sreen Print Run

Using my digital designs as guidlines I began screenprinting. My idea was both to investigate and explore screenprint and create a font.  I began simply by recreating my original designed font using silk screen ink as the media. This cretaed a completly different outcome than my digital responce. I mean Screenprint is much harder but I think the outcome is always worth it.With screenprint your not in control, well you must take control. What I mean is with digital you can very easily navigate things, simply move them a touch, change the colour, adjust a line and so on, with screenprint, ' Screenprint is what it is'.  Whats great about Silkscreen is that quite often its all the little mistakes which creates the outcome.

Modern Masters BBC1 9:00pm
Andy Warhol
Just watched an interesting documentry  about Andy Warhol. It was really interesting. However I do find Warhols idea, his personality, his identity much more fascinating than his actual work . Yet I know this may  seem a dismissive or ignorant comment to make, but in defence I find his work truly amazing, but as some may and have said Warhol himself was the greatest art he has ever created. He was a true showman, along with his Warhol suit and comical wigs and tinted shades. I mean he was once a normal guy out to earn a living, his mind set on becoming an artist, yet over night he became a style icon, a brand, Warhol, one of the most famous artists of his time, of my time. I mean at one time he sold his work for no more than 25 dollors, now his work sells for millions.
Bodoni a-z (lowercase)
Just finished putting idea together. Appreciate any comment. It definatley is in no comparison to Bodoni as the original font, but it's an addition. Each letter form has sort of became a design in itself I believe. May begin  putting words together related to the subject matter, (i.e 7 Deadly Sins).
I began processing my idea, continuing it with each letter form.Anybody any ideas or oppinions abot it as a typeface.

Just playing around with composition in order to find a way to really sell it.

An addition to Bodoni

I have been working on a new type and have just begun putting my idea into practice. I am really pleased with the outcome and have now decided to continue with this idea and maybe experiment a little with it. Exploring mediums like Print making. Just a thought though.

This idea arose whilst researching Bodoni as a font, I came across Adobe Caslon, which basically lead me into this idea.

Developing some Typographic Designs

Just began processing some ideas, using Bodoni as the font for each. I developed each design using each photograph as  the template, allowing each to dictate the layout.

This is my favourite outcome out of this set. The photography sits well with the font and the red blocks of colour compliments the high contrast black and white photograph. This set was inspired by my research into Russian Constructivism and Swiss Design, I think it holds a strong link

Bodoni

I firstly needed to select a font so  I began by reserching font types until I selcted an appropiate font type for me and my designs. I selected Bodoni. Bodoni is a font with a very large family. Bodoni has many copies, many replicars but only one original created Giambattista Bodoni. However the font which I will use and continue to throughout is not actaully the original but an addition, a replicar called Bauer Bodoni Black.Bauer Bodoni Black is a trademark of Bauer Types, an immitation of Bodoni.

Bauer Bodoni Black A-Z ( UPPERCASE)
Bauer Bodoni Black a-z (lowercase)

I will continue to use this font throughout my study. It will hopefully contribute to creating an interesting addition to Bodoni, complimenting the well known font.
Photographs

The idea I happened upon for my FMP and my research into the seven Deadly sins is Typography. This idea developed, whilst analyzing the opening Credits, created by Kyle Cooper in Thriller, 'Se7en'. I intend to thoroughly explore typography within its background. Hopefully I will find this benificial when furthering my study in University. As at the present, I find it extremly worrying how little I actually know. I've went over it so many times in my head and have now decided I must act on it.

So I began by taking a body of photographs, which I may do something with. My idea is to take a set of Photographs, hopefully consisting of great compositions. I  will then allow the photographs to dictate the layout, ( maybe even colours) of my typographic designs, which I hope to develop as a starting point.

This wasn't anticapated; each photograph started to stick to the next, creating this really intersting idea. I could work with this. I find it fascinating how quite often it is the little unintentional things that become the most interesting.

During my last day in London I visited the National Portrait Gallery which was good and the National Museum. Both werent very benificial for me or my project, but it was interesting.

Documenting my visit

Here are a few photographs I took whilst in London.

Tate Britain
London
I thought Tate Modern was much better, if I am honest. It was great though. I mean it is not everyday you get to see the work of Lucien Freud, first hand, is it.

Just a trip to the Capital
London exceeded all expectations. It was absoloutley amazing, I dont know what else to say. It is the place to be really.

London
London exceeded all expectations. It was absoloutley amazing, I dont know what else to say. It is the place to be really. Oh My God the Tate, it was huge, I lost everybody. It was amazing though, there was just so much there. I came across some brilliant artists, I've documented everything within my diary.

Alan Fletcher
50 Years of Graphic Work
Cube, ( Manchester)

Great exhibition. It triggered a lot of ideas. I'm thinking to do something with typography now.
The Whitworth Gallery ( University of Manchester)
Walls are talking Art and Culture

This exhibition was sugested to me by a tutor back at John moores. I found it really interesting and feel it will be really benificial for my project. As throughout this project I intend to thoroughly explore Printmaking. This exhibition triggered many ideas as  I also intend to design and create wallpaper for my final show based on this project.
Continuing to research really and keeping a note of everthing in my personal diary. I will continue to upload research if and when I use the inspiration within my work.

I am now researching appropiate Gallerys to explore, in order to influence my work.

I contiued to research in order to inspire myself and hopefully trigger ideas. The following forms of research were found in the Picture Book. This was a great book I borrowed off my tutor. I think I will actually purchase one myself.

Artist research.
Still researching. Probably continue to do so throughout really. The following illustrators I came across in 'Great Fairytales', a series of Books collected each week from the Guardian, (series of 5, each illustrated by different artists). I began to analze each visually, with the simple idea of tracing paper layerd over the artists illustrations, (idea taken from brave New World).

Friday, 26 March 2010

Been researching all day. Watched the film again aswell, just continueing to analyse it really just incase I missed anything.

It so happens that I did, I missed the mention of a book, which could be vital in my research of the 7 deadly sins. It is called Donte's Inferno just about to find out a little about it as I speak.

Thursday, 25 March 2010

A great exhibition was sugested to me by my tutor, in  'Cube'. It is a Graphic Design exhibition, which is really interesting as you don't really come across an exhibition which is purely Graphic Design. The exhibition is a retrospective of Britians most celebrated Graphic Designer, 'Alan Fletcher'. I'm Looking forward to exploring his work, hopefully it may trigger some ideas.

Another exhibition I found was also sugested to me by a tutor called ' Walls are talking, Art and Culture', which is situated in the Whitworth Art Gallery. This exhibition is a combination of 30 artists work.

The Whitworth is also in Manchester like Cube, so it would make sense if I went to both on the same day.

Another two gallerys I will explore is 'CUC' - Cntrl Alt shift unmasks corruption and 'Walker Art Gallery' -John Moores prize winners 1957-2006. Which are both situated in Liverpool.

Still researching, I swear ive searched every web, every link, every gallery.

I have began to look at different exhibitions, currently on to visit. Anyone any ideas.
